A rising star in the world of fine marine art, Paul Beebe has dedicated himself to expression in oil paints for more than thirty-five years. Visiting Martha’s Vineyard and experiencing the light and atmosphere in and around the ocean set his direction at a very early age. He paints both en plein air as well as in studio creating his own reference materials for each work, for each subject matter. He luxuriates in the cloud formations, the waves, the subtle color changes created by the water’s changing depth, the foliage, the boats, and every other detail. Beginning with a minimalist palette of colors, he layers the paints and colors to create the basis of color and mood for the piece at hand. He labors over the details of the light’s function throughout the images to ensure that each brush stroke is not only true and appropriate but also compelling. He studies the elements to ensure the motion is also true to his predetermined subject matter.
Beebe grew up in Connecticut where he also majored in graphic design, graduating from Southern Connecticut State University. Over the years, Beebe has gained significant recognition from his peers in marine art, earning the status of signature member of the prestigious American Society of Marine Artists and gaining admission to the famed Salmagundi Art Club of New York City and the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association. Among his notable juried shows that his work has been selected for were the last eight shows presented by the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut including winning two of the coveted awards of excellence and the Rudolph J. Schaefer III Emerging Artist Award. Further, he has been featured in both the American Society of Marine Artists journal and Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.
