FAQs

Do I have to be an artist to be a member?

Most of our members are artists, but we welcome curators, scholars, teachers and anyone else with an interest in maritime art, maritime history, and marine wildlife.

What is a Signature member?

Signature members are artists who have submitted a portfolio for review and have been accepted into Signature status. They may use the letters ASMA after their signatures on their artwork. They are required to submit at least one artwork to ASMA exhibitions.

What is a Fellow of the Society?

The Fellows represent the highest standards of excellence in marine art as well as a high degree of maritime knowledge and experience. They manage the artistic affairs of the Society. The Fellows elect Signature Members and new Fellows.

How do I apply to be a Signature member?

The portfolio review period is in the early Spring of each year. Aspiring members must submit twelve images and a brief biographical statement.

Can I show my art on the ASMA site?

Signature members, for a nominal fee, can show a web gallery of three images, plus a link to your own website.

Can I submit art created digitally?

We do not accept art created digitally for Signature Artist status. We accept traditional mediums only. However, for the submission you will need digital pictures (jpegs) of your artwork.

Can I exhibit my artwork?

We hold periodic exhibitions of member artwork at various museums around the country. These are not for sale events. We do hold occasional exhibitions that are for sale in galleries.

No, not directly. Most of our exhibitions are in museums, but we do hold occasional exhibitions that are for sale in galleries.
