  • Serena’s website

Over 40 years ago, Serena Bates started her journey of exploration and interpretation of the world around her through art. Beginning probably at the age of 8 or 9, she started with pencil and paper and went on to study traditional figure painting and anatomy at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Over the years she has explored many mediums including charcoal, pastel, oil and acrylic paint to name a few, but when she discovered clay, she went over to the “Dark Side” as she likes to say. She had finally found her soul mate and companion saying, “When you find a material that you can work with tirelessly for hours and think minutes have passed, and your excitement still bubbles over when you leave the studio for the day, you have found home.” The artist describes herself as a storyteller with an affinity for portraits and animals. “Life’s stories plant seeds in my mind, take shape in my soul, and are born through my sculptures.”

Clay, Bronze and Stone are her mediums of choice. Being non-traditional in her approach, she does not take measurements, but instead relies on her eye and sense of observation to interpret a subject. Trusting intuition and a connection to the subject are more important to her than static measurements. This approach breathes life into her work and produces what she calls a “wabi-sabi” affect, the Japanese term that literally means the beauty found in imperfection or “imperfectly perfect.”

Serena has exhibited in nationally known exhibitions and galleries across the United States and Canada. She has won many prestigious awards and honors during her career from the American Artists Professional League, Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Club, the Academic Artist Association, Mystic Museum of Art to name only a few. The artist is also a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Artists for Conservation, Allied Artists of America, American Artists Professional League and Salmagundi Club.

Upon discovering the joy of working with clay, Serena found her passion for sculpting portraits – busts and full figures, both serious and whimsical – and all sorts of critters with lots of personality: barnyard animals, domestic ones, and increasingly over time, marine animals. She added working with bronze and stone to her repertoire. Many years of observing animals in nature, at home, and in her job at the Mystic Aquarium, helped Serena develop her non-traditional approach to sculpting. Rather than taking measurements, Serena trusts her observations, intuition and connection to the stories of the people and animals she portrays, producing a “Wabi-Sabi” effect, Japanese for perfectly imperfect.

“Stories are what define my work, what drive my vision, what inspire my hands...my life,” she says. The stories-turned-sculptures range from a clay White Rabbit staring down to the bottom of a log, looking for Alice; to bronze Three Stooges fountainheads squirting water from pursed lips; to alabaster octopi and mermaids at play and at rest.

This approach has proven successful, with Serena’s sculptures shown in nationally-known exhibitions and galleries across the United States and Canada. She has won more than 70 awards and honors during her career. In the last five years alone, she has won more than 20 prestigious awards from the American Artists Professional League, Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Club, the Academic Artist Association, and Mystic Museum of Art, to name a few. The artist is also a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Allied Artists of America, American Artists Professional League, and the Salmagundi Club.

“Survivor,” winner of the Environmental Statement Award, presented in 2019 at the Artists for Conservation’s International Juried Exhibition in Vancouver, is a wonderful case. The ceramic work cracked in the heat of being pit-fired. Serena recalled a Japanese approach of filling cracks with gold and used that method, making the harbor seal look scarred from being caught in a fishing net. Wabi Sabi, indeed.

  • David’s website

David Kizziar started drawing at the age of five and, despite having no formal art education progressed naturally from pencil to ink and then oils.

Moved by lighting, composition, and his love for the techniques of the Master’s, David Kizziar is inspired to create pieces which build from his natural artistic gift of portraying life-like movement and capturing tonal values to give perspective.  Growing up on the California Coast, it is not a surprise to see that much of David’s work has been inspired by the ocean through his highly detailed seascape drawings. David’s Original drawings in monochromatic colored pencil, sanguine, graphite or ink can take hundreds of hours to complete with no room for mistakes.

Collectors often are surprised by the gentleness and realistic interpretations of a subject that David creates which makes them feel like they are right there in the moment as the artist himself was oftentimes, eliciting an unexpected outward emotional and sometimes tearful response.

  • Patsy’s website

A self-taught artist who discovered art later in life, I found my authentic artistic voice working with graphite.   Drawing directly onto a cradled Ampersand Claybord surface, I begin with a simple line drawing that serves as a contour map for the entire piece.  Working from darkest dark to lightest light, I apply various forms of graphite, including water-soluble and powdered graphite, layer upon layer, building texture and depth, to tell a story.
The underlying story of a work of art becomes more poignant and arresting when the visual language is reduced to lines, shapes, and values.  Absent the romance of color, working in shades of grey is like telling a short story versus writing a novel.   I strive for my graphite art to evoke both story and emotion, to resonate with recollection and recognition.
My work is representational but not photorealistic. The maker’s mark is evident in my work, but the overall impact is that of a painting more than a drawing.   My art is not about visual perfection.   It is about visual perception.

  • Jan’s website

Jan Min is driven by the pleasure he finds in creating atmosphere and lights found in the
    land and seascapes around him.
Using different tones and shadings, he commits the beauty, that inhabits the places he visits,
giving them a sensitivity that is doubled with a latent poetry, which he strives with the
viewer. Most of them are places he visit or visited and captivated his attention.
Sometimes the subjects are places he would love to be, being in his studio again.
As soon as there is a passionate feel about his subject, he has a strong urge to paint it and
share it. The emotion of making the painting goes beyond all for him , just as purity,
simplicity and the art of omission
Only then there will be a connection with the viewer. This is often remarked by the public
    about his works

Since  2015 he is a co founder of IWS Holland and is since 2022 the President of it.
He shows his works world around in many exhibitions, is a much invited Master guest ,did
win numerous awards (latest :Fabriano International Watercolor certificate of Merit , a Top
25 International Award and  a Merit Award in the NWS/RWS Exhibition in Edinburgh)), is an International jury member, gives many demo’s and workshops live and online, is a respected teacher , has many publications in well know magazines and published his book: Catch the Light.

Most of his joy in teaching is to inspire other painters, letting them feel the happiness of
creating, improving their techniques and levels, and loves to make connections between

  • Sculpting began as childhood whittling.  I have always made things from natural materials beginning with wood.  Making art has been a driving force for me.  My adult years were spent designing and constructing musical instruments which sold through various dealers nationwide.
After moving to Maine, I began sculpting, first in granite and now in wood.  The process of creating a realist whale, a magnificent creature, is a challenge.

  • Frank’s website

Painter and sculptor Frank Walsh was born and raised in San Francisco, California. Frank acquired his knowledge and skill through years of self-directed independent study. Throughout much of his art career, he has worked in the two dimensions, drawing and painting with pen and ink, acrylics and oils. Recently, Frank has added sculptures to his portfolio. Working with clay and casting with the lost wax method provides the high level of detail Frank requires for his bronze pieces. Instead of finishing with a chemical patina, Frank developed a painting style that enables him to give the impression of refracted light and depth of color.

  • Desiree’s website

Traveling along the Eastern Seaboard, I find inspiration in the charm of coastal towns, small fishing villages, and the natural beauty of the shoreline. Whether journeying by boat, walking the docks, or immersing myself in these communities, I paint the romantic essence of the coast and sea—balancing realism with impressionism.

My work combines luminous atmosphere with realistic draftsmanship, giving structure to boats, buoys, and lighthouses. Impressionistic skies and reflective seas allow the paintings to breathe with movement and light. This blend of expressive brushwork and natural radiance captures the rhythm and serenity of maritime life.

I’m honored to exhibit with the Mariner Gallery, Main Street Gallery, Salmagundi Club, American Society of Marine Artists, American Artists Professional League, and Guild of Creative Art. My most recent exhibitions include the Mariner Gallery Darien Plein Air Invitational, the American Artists Professional League 97th Grand National Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club, and Oil Painters of America’s Eastern Regional Exhibition, hosted by Beverly McNeil Gallery.

Each piece I create is rooted in my experience of the sea, aiming to transport the viewer to a moment of my connection with the marine world I love.
