  • Using a Single-Edge Razor in the Studio

One of my favorite tools in the studio is also one of the sharpest: the single-edge razor blade. I use it daily for a variety of jobs and techniques. For example, in painting landscapes, I use it to incise lines for grasses and fine branches; in boat paintings, for riggings and ropes; in still life, for scraping out highlights, and even as an applicator for thicker impasto “strokes.” I use it to clean my glass palette, scrape paint build-up from the sink, and clean pigment from brush handles. For drawing, I sharpen pencils, charcoal sticks, and pastels with it - all to the type of point desired. The blade is sharp; in the studio, its use is universal.
